Based on a poem by Sylvia Plath, this piece uses a variety of vocal sounds as expressions of the meaning of the text. The instruments function on an equal basis with the voices, creating a textural and timbral fusion between voice and instrument. The relationship of text and meaning is explored in different ways: as fragmented words and phrases, as a chant, and in a traditional, syllabic setting of text and music. Winter Trees is dedicated to the memory of Sylvia Plath.
